Two nights ago, I dreamed that I spent too much talking, didn't finish packing, and almost missed a train. Last night, I dreamed that not only did I not finish packing, but then, when I got to the airport, my passport was stolen, and the authorities were of no assistance. Oh, the anxiety!
Why these anxious dreams? Well, friends, if you haven't yet heard...
I'm going to Kenya!
Yes. It's time for the next abroad adventure. I couldn't let the travel bug get the best of me!
On January 6th, I will board a plane headed for Nairobi, Kenya, and after almost 28 hours of travelling, I step out onto African soil for the very first time. And I'll have 19 companions: 17 fellow students and 2 professors.
For 3 weeks, we will be in Kenya, learning about water systems and distribution and how those things both affect and are affected by the societies and cultures in which they are found as a class entitled, "In Search of Water in Kenya". It's the best kind of class: one where the homework is solely experience. According to the "syllabus" (itinerary), we will be visiting the embassy, exploring the Sedai Village, hiking to a waterfall, milking camels, performing cultural interviews, touring a tea plantation, sleeping in a game park, and only showering maybe three times. This is keeping in mind that anything can happen, and flexibility and patience is not optional in Africa. Anything could happen. What could be more exciting?!
As I prepare (getting shots, asking for Chacos for Christmas, searching Goodwill for long skirts, and trying to kick my caffeine addiction, amidst other things), I'm realizing how impossible it is to prepare for something like this (maybe hence the dreams?). It's just that, I don't know everything that's going to happen, and I've never done something quite like this. But I truly think that's for the best and am looking forward to the opportunities God has prepared.
I'm ready to learn! About water systems, about the cultural significance of water systems and how it affects engineering solutions, about the Lord, and about how I can better serve him. Please pray for me as I go! There has been some dangerous turmoil in Kenya as of late, and perfect safety cannot be guaranteed. The Lord is working, though, and has everything in his control; not only with the political situations but also with my own heart.
I'll share the trip with you, provided I have internet and a computer at some point along the way! And this should include pictures; there will be some pretty neat things to see. Thanks for being a part of another leg of another journey!
"And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?'
Then I said, 'Here am I! Send me.'" ISAIAH 6:8
"The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore." PSALM 121:8
Praying for safe travels for you!
